MY FAVOURITE POEMS

"Here is an old classic written by Ayodhya Singh Upadhyaya Hariaudh. Hariaudh Ji (born 1865, died 1947) was one of the earliest poets of modern Hindi. Here he gives a evergreen prescription for success in life.

"Those of us who grew up in 50s and 60s and before that, may remember that there were conscious efforts by the parents and teachers to make the children morally strong. There were preachings to that effect hidden in poems, stories and updeshas. My impression is that this emphasis has gradually shifted and the message that goes to children today is to rather be successful, earn a lot and enjoy life. Becoming morally right has lost its sheen. Here is a poem from the old world. An exhortation to children to attain great heights by working hard and being morally strong. "

Here is an old classic from Rashtra Kavi Maithili Sharan Gupt. That was the time when poets like senior elder men would not hesitate in giving sound advice to society and people. This is some thing rarely seen now.

Here is an excerpt from a very popular poem by Kaka Hathrasi. We often see people having names that simply do not go along with their personalities. Kaka is pointing out this fact in the funniest way.

Flower and thorns are products of the same plant but have such different characteristics. Being born to same parents does not ensure similar character. Here is a famous poem of Hariaudh Ji

Here is a moving poem about wishes of a child to climb a tree on the river bank and play a tiny wooden flute to surprise his mother. In this high-tech age of computer games, this poem reminds us how great joy can be derived from simple things in life

Have you traveled through rural areas in Northern India in springtime? It is the time when the winter chill is giving way to glorious days with blue sky and cool sunshine. Farmers plant wheat and mustard together and the crops are harvested soon after spring. In springtime, one sees acres and acres of yellow carpet of mustard flowers towering over the green sea of wheat plants. And if you sit and watch for a while, you see the “Basanti Hawa” blowing quietly and most refreshingly, making waves in wheat crop. It is this most peaceful experience that Kadernath Ji has so beautifully painted in his words. Please read on

Here is the story of a rain drop, apprehensive and scared of being destroyed. Instead, it falls into a seepi and turns in a pearl. A simple, effective and moving poem that assuages the fear of unknown in us when we embark in a new activity or start a new phase of life, and gives us hope.

Here is a great poem of Gulzar, immortalized in the movie “Aandhi”. People may start their life’s journey from seemingly equal levels, but some achieve great heights in their careers where other settle into very ordinary lives. The metaphor of high speed highways and tiny side by lanes is so apt. Who were equal once are now at such different planes that they cannot come closer even if they so wish
